History of the Brong Ahafo Association of Washington
Metropolitan Area

“The way forward looks dim and lifeless when one begins a journey to the unknown and HOPE, therefore, becomes our greatest asset.” Hence the need to come together as one people and unite to serve and promote our young region far away from home. The information contained herein, though accurate may not be sufficient, yet it gives an idea of how it all started.

To the pioneers and anyone who has played a role in the development of this great Association, I say well done for the time and energy spent for doing what is expected of you. I say more grease to your elbows.

CONCEPT AND BIRTH

The BRONG AHAFO ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON AREA was the brainchild of Nana Agyeman Gyau. The humble beginning of the Association started in 1974 at apartment 204, 714 Sligo Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland – United States of America.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the association was to try and identify all Brong Ahafo citizens in the United States and form an Association to (1) help us in time of need; (2) create a data bank for our citizens; (3) get to know each other and above all serve our region in particular in any capacity and Ghana as a whole.

The idea was to start within the Washington Metropolitan area and eventually spread throughout the rest of the U. S. and Canada.

PIONEERS

Nana Agyeman Gyau invited the following people to share the idea and it was accepted.

  1. Mr. Gottfried Amoh

  2. Mr. and Mrs. Twum Barimah

  3. Atta Yaw

  4. Mr. and Mrs. Aggrey

Since we were not that many, we decided to insure ourselves as a group for life and death. Due to the migration of some of the members the activities of the Association were reduced to its minimum.

REVIVIFICATION OF THE ASSOCIATION

In 1982/3, some energetic patriots of Brong Ahafo approached Nana Agyeman Gyau to regenerate the Association that they had heard a lot about and they were willing to assist and participate.

These young men were: Messrs: Kwabena Abrefa Nketia, Mr. Kwadwo Osei Agyeman, and the Late Dr. Twum Barimah, Mr. Kwame. Boateng, Mr. Anane Agyei, Kwame Anane Asare and Mr. Amponsah. As a result of their enthusiasm to make a change and work as promised, the activities of the association were revitalized. Bylaws and a constitution were drawn up and an election was conducted. Nana Agyeman Gyau was elected as the Founder and first President. Inauguration of the Association was held at the newly constructed District of Columbia Convention Center in 1983. The keynote speaker was Dr. K. Owusu Ansah, QC from London. Dr. Owusu Ansah is a native of Wenchi.

The Association was very instrumental and played a pivotal role in organizing and establishing the Brong Ahafo Association of New York and COGA in the Washington metropolitan area.
